A South Ozone Park resident and her daughter were ejected from the rear of a vehicle at approximately 5 p.m. this past Sunday, killing the older woman.
The police and EMS arrived on scene found the woman, identified as Zaalika Rasool, 40, and her nine-year-old daughter lying on the ground at 115th Avenue and 130th Street in South Ozone Park, both unconscious and unresponsive with severe trauma to the head and body.
The investigation of the crash by the NYPD determined that a 2002 BMW X5 was speeding westbound on 115th Avenue, ran the stop sign and struck a 2010 Toyota Corolla that was headed north on 130 Street. The BMW hit the Corolla then hit three parked cars before stopping.
Rasool and her daughter were the rear passengers in the Toyota when they were ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision.
She was pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene. Her nine-year-old daughter was transported in critical condition to Long Island Jewish Hospital.
The driver of the BMW fled the scene and was caught by police on Tuesday. He was identified as Jairam Budhu, 58, of College Point. Budhu was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, and aggravated unlicensed operator.
EMS also transported a 71-year-old male passenger and the 47-year-old male driver of the Toyota, and the 46-year-old male passenger of Budhu’s BMW to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
