Long Island City residents will be able to do their summer reading outside and online.
Installation of wireless Internet at Hunters Point South Park is slated to begin in April, according to the Parks Department and Time Warner Cable. Parks spokesperson Meghan Lalor said that residents can expect to connect “later this spring.”
TWC is installing the park’s WiFi as part of a $6 million commitment to the Ctiy. As explained by officials at the Department of Information, Technology and Telecommunications, the WiFi installation and other public benefits were negotiated by the City in 2011- part of franchise renewals with Time Warner Cable and Cablevision.
Time Warner customers with Standard Internet and above can connect for free. Residents can connect for free for 10-minute sessions, or purchase 99-cent day passes.
“We are excited to soon make our TWC WiFi services available to the Hunters Point South Park as part of our ongoing relationship with the NYC Parks,” the company said in an emailed statement.
Community Board 2 chairman Pat O’Brien called WiFi access at this park a “positive development,” which the board supports.
“This would be a wonderful thing,” O’Brien said.
