Several members of the New York National Guard have recently reenlisted, including Middle Village’s Staff Sgt. Avery Torres (who will continue service with Company A, Recruiting and Retention Battalion), East Elmhurst’s Sgt. Nathaly Eumanacacandia (who will continue with the 719th Transportation Company), Forest Hills’ Private First Class Edwin Olivera (who will continue with Operations Company, 42nd Infantry Division) and Far Rockaway’s Sgt. Steadman Blake (who will continue with the 1,569th Transportation Company) and Sgt. Nigel Chen (who will continue with Headquarters, 106th Regiment, Regional Training Institute).
Three Queens students—Astoria’s Afi Akakpo, South Richmond Hill’s Shayanna Roman and Jamaica’s Mirza Ahmed—were recently awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad from SUNY New Paltz.
Ridgewood’s Avery Santiago has been selected for Ithaca College’s inaugural cohort of BOLD Scholars, which is comprised of 10 juniors who have become part of an initiative focused on cultivating courageous leadership among college women. Santiago, who was chosen from among more than 100 applicants, will travel with nine other students to Rutgers University for the national BOLD summit and retreat.
Sunnyside’s Amanita Setari recently obtained certification in CPR for health providers. Setari is a biomedical sciences student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s Doylestown campus.

Lloyd Mumby (Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery); Jamaica’s Pvt. Gregory Jacobs (145th Maintenance Company), Spc. Shadenie Bolton (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation) and Pvt. Jesmond Patterson (Company B, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry); and Cambria Heights’ Pvt. Gabriel McFadden (145th Maintenance Company).
