A 22-year-old Middletown man faces 40 years in prison after he allegedly shot a woman as she left a subway station in Long Island City, the Queens district attorney said.
Snooze Brown, 22, was arrested in Nassau County 500 yards from the Queens border. He allegedly told arresting officers, “I know I’m a fugitive. I seen myself on TV. How much time am I going to get?”
According to Queens DA Richard Brown, Brown and his girlfriend, Monecha Sims, were arguing in his apartment on Vernon Avenue in Long Island City on Jan. 26. She left the apartment, he followed her outside and they continued to argue. Sims called her mother and she arrived, Brown allegedly began shooting at his girlfriend. She was not hit, but a school teacher, Jaivon Mitchner, was struck while exiting the subway station at 41st Avenue and 21st Street.
Mitchner looked down and saw the holes in her shirt and jacket and then noticed blood covering her mid-section.
Mitchner was treated for the gunshot wound at a nearby hospital. Brown allegedly fled the scene and was arrested two days later when he was spotted by police in Nassau County.
Upon capture he allegedly said, “I pulled the gun out of my waistband and the gun went off. It was an accident.”
When asked why he didn’t get rid of the gun, Brown allegedly told investigators, “I’m an idiot,” and later apologized for shooting the teacher.
He was held without bail and charged with second-degree attempted murder, second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second- and third-degree assault and second-degree menacing.
“This is yet again a perfect example of how dangerous illegal guns are and how innocent people can become a victim of senseless violence,” the DA said. “The defendant in this case allegedly admitted to carrying a gun and having it ‘accidentally’ go off while in the midst of a violent argument with his girlfriend. A young woman was struck and could have been killed. Luckily, she will survive the injury. The defendant now faces the possibility of spending a very long time locked away from civilized society.”
