The original Jamaica High School opened in 1854. A second building replaced it in 1895, and it was, in turn, replaced by this building in the 1920s. At one time the largest high school in New York, Jamaica High was noted for both a diverse student body and excellent academic standards, but it fell into a sharp decline in its last decades, finally closing in 2014.
