G.X. Mathews was president of a real estate firm that, in 1914, held a quarter of all Queens building permits, having built housing in Ridgewood, Astoria, Sunnyside, Elmhurst and elsewhere. His Model Flats, advertised to working people, boasted “A Window in Every Room” and “Never a Foreclosure.”
