Super Soccer Stars Shine Program uses soccer as a vehicle to teach life skills to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, ADHD and PDD-NOS.
Super Soccer Stars Shine works with a developmentally-appropriate curriculum designed by licensed educators and therapists that promotes the complete growth of each individual and encourages players to improve at his or her own pace. It uses soccer to enhance peer interactions and provide a safe environment for players to increase social potential.
Shine Shadows will provide assistance to children, from engagement of the individual child to facilitation and physical assistance in running, kicking or following class directions. The goal of the Shine Shadow is to begin with a hands-on approach and progressively transition into more of an independent process, where the Shine Shadow is used as a support figure.
Super Soccer Stars realizes the importance of inclusion—to play alongside players who can provide model behaviors that provide a platform for Shine players to enhance their own techniques and play experiences, which in turn will increase self-esteem and socialization skills vital to their development and ultimate success as soccer players.
Classes focus on simplifying soccer into specific components, while teammates work together to build new skills in a fun, non-competitive and educational environment.
SHINE camps are open to ages 6 to 12, and adhere to children with a variety of diagnoses. Camp days begin with a general introduction from Shine soccer coaches, followed by a team cheer and dynamic warm-up, which consists of dynamic movements without the soccer ball—such as running, skipping and walking backwards. Warm-ups last approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Following the warm up, there are two skill sessions, during which players and coaches engage in soccer skill development through fun, skill-based games. After the skill building and game portions, the camp proceeds to a game. The big game is Shine and Super Soccer Stars’ version of a real, two-sided soccer game, aimed at teaching directionality, teamwork and the basics of the world’s most beautiful game.
