Sunnyside triple threat Serhat Kaner will compete against 10 other contestants at a talent contest named after legend Frank Sinatra in New Jersey.
Kaner—who also goes by the stage name Jax Gabriel—is a professional singer, author and actor whose career has spanned more than 20 years and consisted of performances in Turkey, Belgium, Germany and numerous other locales. In June, he will take part in the Sinatra Idol Contest 2017 in Hoboken.
“My uncle was a big fan of jazz, always encouraging me to listen to and understand the music of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and Gene Kelly,” Kaner said. “At age 7, I started to sing Sinatra songs at home. Along with Elvis Presley, Sinatra inspired me to attend the music conservatory to become a classically trained professional singer.”
Given his combination of versatility and multiple talents, Kaner’s performances are marked by his frequent transitioning from the “Great American Songbook” to current pop and country music favorites. Kaner doesn’t stick to one tone, nor does he favor to a particular genre. When he performs, he often combines everything from smooth jazz to Broadway classics and vintage rock ‘n’ roll.
Kaner attended Istanbul University in Turkey, where he performed in the Opera Singer Division. In addition to his musical experience, Kaner acted in several TV series, including “Law & Order: SVU,” in which he was featured in several episodes.
Currently, Kaner said that he is working on his third book. His first two published books—“Mehmetçik Basri Dirimlili” and “Arif Emirzade”—focused on a soccer legend regarding the Turkish Fenerbahçe S.K. football club.
Although Kaner has performed at numerous international venues, he frequently sings in the five boroughs. Some of his local shows have included Open Stage, New Year’s Eve and Acoustic Oldies But Goodies at Savann Restaurant; Dazies Italian Restaurant, Nighthawks Café NYC, Shillelagh Tavern in Astoria and the Sidewalk Café.
The Sinatra Idol competition will begin at 6:30 p.m. on June 15 at Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken.
