Originating between 1924 and 1928, Sunnyside Gardens is one of the first planned communities in the United States and is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
The district takes up approximately 16 blocks that include more than 600 buildings and 12 courts, including the Carolin Gardens, Colonial Court, Hamilton Court, Hamilton Court Apartments, Harrison Place, Jefferson Court, Lincoln Court, Madison Court North and South, Monroe Court Apartments, Phipps Garden Apartments I, Phipps Garden Apartments II, Roosevelt Court, Washington Court and Wilson Court.
The community consists of one-, two- and three-family homes, in addition to apartment buildings, all of which are made of Hudson brick. All of the private homes have a small front garden facing the street and a private garden in the rear.
Considered one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Queens, Sunnyside Gardens has been a go-to for film shoots. Some notable films that have shot in the area include Spider-Man, Raising Helen, Sleepers and The Believer.
