The corner of Bell Boulevard and Union Turnpike now bears the name of Reverend John Murray, who served with the American Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Oakland Gardens for 14 years.
Councilman Barry Grodenchik (D-Oakland Gardens) hosted a street co-naming on Sunday to honor the reverend, who was known in the community for helping those suffering with alcoholism or other addictions.
“Reverend John Murray was respected by the whole community and loved by all,” Grodenchik said. “Father Murray left a tremendous impact on our community and his memory will always be treasured.
After receiving petition signatures collected by the Knights of Columbus Father John J. Murray Council 14666 and getting approval from Community Board 11, Grodenchik introduced the legislation for the renaming, which was unanimously approved by the City Council.
The ceremony took place after 10:30 a.m. mass at the American Martyrs Roman Catholic Church and was held with the church’s pastor, Reverend Frank Schwarz.
