To The Editor:
It comes as no surprise that the Queens Chamber of Commerce supports soccer and hockey venues in Willets Point, adjacent to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, as advocated by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz in the March letter to the editor, “Queens Could Be Sports Mecca.” When it comes to preservation of the integrity of FMCP as an important urban park, the Queens Chamber of Commerce has long qualified as its public enemy number one. It did not oppose a Grand Prix in the park, nor the twice usurpation of park land by the USTA. I am sure it would welcome removing the park from the city’s municipal park system and turning it into a sports mecca.
That stadiums in Willets Point will destroy the 2008 Willets Point plan and affordable housing is of no significance to the Queens Chamber of Commerce. All it cares about is what it can get from millionaire sports entrepreneurs—and the little people of Queens be damned. If it wants to render an important service to the people of Queens, it should leave.
