The Long Island Aquarium is a fin-tastic destination that features one of the largest all-living coral reef displays in this hemisphere, a 120,000-gallon shark tank, year-round sea lion shows, African Penguins, Marmosets, numerous touch tanks and more than 100 exhibits, including the lavish indoor gardens of the site’s Butterflies, Bugs and Birds Exhibit.
The exhibit features more than 30 species of North American and exotic, tropical free-flying butterflies and is the only insect display of its kind in New York— and one of the only exhibits of its kind in the northeast. It features a variety of bugs, from the most deadly to the largest and most colorful. Visitors can hand feed the gorgeous conures, ringnecks and lovebirds in the aquarium’s bird aviary.
Attendees can also try the site’s JAWsome Aquatic Adventures—such as the Shark Dive, in which visitors get into a cage and travel down to the Lost City of Atlantis Shark Exhibit. There’s also the Penguin Encounter, in which attendees can get up close and personal with the aquarium’s cute feathered friends. Visitors can even snorkel with tropical fish from around the world through the seasonal Pirate Snorkel Adventure or take a souvenir photo with a penguins or sea lion. Visitors celebrating their birthdays will receive free aquarium admission with a valid ID.
There are plenty of special events on the calendar for guests of all ages. Upcoming events include Family Sleepovers, during which visitors explore the aquarium after hours and then spend the night in front of one of the tanks. During Fish & Sips, adults can taste wines from more than 20 local vineyards.
Named a Top 10 Aquarium for Children by Parents Magazine, the Long Island Aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Long Island Aquarium is located at 431 East Main St. in Riverhead.
