A Far Rockaway man with a suspended license attempted to flee the scene of an accident on Saturday night and hit an additional five cars on the Van Wyck service road in South Ozone Park, according to police.
Joseph Wood, 36, was exiting the Van Wyck Expressway at approximately 9:30 on Saturday night in his 2016 Hyundai SUV when he hit a 2014 Nissan SUV, causing the Nissan to flip. Wood then continued driving northbound on the service road when he rear-ended a 2013 Jeep. He also left that scene and went through an intersection at a steady red light and rear-ended a 2014 Toyota SUV, which then hit a 2015 Chevy SUV which in turn hit a 2003 Toyota SUV.
Wood never stopped to exchange information with any of the vehicles’ drivers and continued to try and flee until his car stalled near 111th Avenue in South Ozone Park.
Three people were sent to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with injuries, and two complained of pain but refused medical care.
Wood is charged with five counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, unlawful possession of marijuana and leaving the scene of multiple accidents. He has a history of six suspensions on his license.
