Thomas Joseph’s Sports Bar and Grill is New Hyde Park’s best kept secret.
The owner, Thomas Joseph Schanz Jr., prides his food as the highest quality and keeps his beer on tap at an icy 35 °F.
The bar recently had a complete restoration in the dining area and kitchen. They now have 16 flat screen TVs hanging throughout the establishment ranging from 24 inches to 70 inches in size. “The construction came out more beautiful than we anticipated,” said Schanz. He said, “We did everything; the floors, the walls, the ceilings, the bathrooms, and all new oak tables.” He finished the renovation before he fully took over as the sole proprietor during the months of July, August and September. He was happy to say, “We only had to close for three days in that period.”
Schanz took over the bar in October 2015 and when asked what he is most proud of, he stated in a matter of fact tone, “everything.”
He was happy to brag about their specials, “We have a sports menu for whenever a New York team is playing. They’re good specials.” He said it’s all year round. “It’s almost like a five dollar menu with drink specials,” and added, “Even if the Rangers are playing in L.A., it counts.”
“We make a jalapeño corn potato chowder that is to die for, people call up and ask for it,” he boasted.
“Everything is from scratch. It doesn’t pay to go half way. If you’re going to do it, do it right,” said Schanz.
They have all new kitchen equipment “which goes a long way,” he said. Schanz is also proud of everything that happens in the kitchen, from the flat iron steak, to their high quality jumbo shrimp, famous blackened chicken sandwich, and their big succulent buffalo wings. He noted, “You can’t beat my prices.”
The bar also features an area for darts, where two teams call home, and programs like paint and wine nights, line dancing, singles events with Plenty O’ Fish, Match.com and others.
Schanz said they have held successful birthday, anniversary, FDNY functions, high school reunions and many other themed parties. “We can take on anything,” he said.
One of his inspirations for buying the bar, after being a patron there for ten years, is his joy for meeting and talking with new people. He actively employs the time-tested philosophy of buying back his patrons a beer once they’ve already had a few. “I like buying them drinks and telling stories,” he said.
