A newborn boy was discovered in a garbage can in Dutch Kills Park in Astoria on Saturday, police said.
Devon Davis, who found the baby and reported it to police, said that he was in the park early in the morning on Saturday and smelled something strange. His friend’s mother waved him over to a garbage can and told him that she found a baby in the trash can.
He said that he looked in and didn’t see the baby moving or breathing. Davis noted that the baby was wrapped in a bright yellow plastic bag and his friend’s mother unwrapped it a little to see if the baby was breathing.
“It’s messed up and foul, and it’s just something that I didn’t like to see,” said Davis, who lives near the park.
Police arrived at 10:48 a.m. at the location of the park on the corner of 36th Avenue and Crescent Street. Officers found the baby unconscious and unresponsive, police said. EMS transported the child to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The city’s medical examiner has yet to determine cause of death.
