State Senate Democratic leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and State Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) called on the Senate’s co-leaders to include funding for the New York State DREAM Act in their budget resolution.
Assemblyman Francisco Moya (D-Jackson Heights), the sponsor of the DREAM Act, expressed his gratitude to Stewart-Cousins and Peralta for their support.
“Including funding for the DREAM Act in the Senate budget resolution takes us one large step closer to realizing the dream,” Moya said. “As we move into the economy of the future, we need every young mind in our midst to contribute to our workforce. We should not allow the talents of young strivers in New York to go to waste, just because they can’t afford to go to college and don’t have the paperwork that allows them to apply for financial aid.”
The DREAM Act has passed the Assembly and now awaits action in the Senate. If passed, it would allow all of New York’s children to apply for financial aid for college, regardless of their immigration status.
