Martha Taylor accepted accolades from Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Fresh Meadows) and Councilman Barry Grodenchik (D-Oakland Gardens) after she was elected as Chairwoman of the Community Board 8 on May 11th.
“Martha Taylor and the Weprin family go back many, many years,” Weprin said. “She’s done so much in this community.”
Taylor was a staffer for David Weprin’s late father Saul Weprin, a Speaker of the State Assembly.
“I have absolutely every confidence that Martha is going to be a great leader,” Grodenchik said.
Taylor worked for a number of elected officials as a community liaison. She has also been a Democratic District Leader for over 10 years. Additionally, she founded Friends of Cunningham Park.
Previously, Taylor served as Second Vice Chair for over 20 years.
“I will try to do my best, and keep this board as wonderful as it has always been,” she said.
Five of Queens’ 14 Community Board are now chaired by women. Like all positions on the board, the chairmanship is a volunteer, unpaid position.
