A Little Neck driver was transported to North Shore University Hospital after overturning his car and crashing onto the front lawn of a two-story apartment building in the Deepdale Gardens co-op Monday morning.
The driver was in serious condition after being extricated from the vehicle, an FDNY spokesperson said. Neighbors identified the driver as Sidney Gross, a 92-year-old Deepdale Gardens resident and a former Marine. There were no other injuries.
Gross was leaving the driveway of a parking lot on 61st Avenue at around 9 a.m., when he suddenly accelerated across the street, witnesses said. He clipped a tree in front of the building, flipping over and crashing into the building’s handicap accessible ramp. By the afternoon, the accident was cleared and the ramp’s remnants were removed.
Gary Silver, 73, who lives in the building, said he heard a “tremendous crash,” and came outside to find the car on his lawn. “There were guys working here, they were painting the foundation,” he said. “He missed them.” Silver said that Gross was lucid and responsive after the accident.
Anthony DiBetta, 71, lives in the apartment next door to Gross. DiBetta was concerned about his neighbor. “He’s a wonderful guy,” he said.
