More than five decades ago, America warmed to The Jetsons, an animated sitcom that took place in the future and featured futuristic inventions, holograms, aliens and even robots, one of which was Rosie, the family’s maid.
Rosie was every homemaker’s dream. Why concern oneself with household chores, when they can be completed by a robot maid?
While Rosie was the stuff of fantasy at the time, the concept has become more common today. Cleaning robots are now sold around the world, although some are more high-tech than others.
Corona’s LeFrak City has welcomed this trend. However, the housing community’s robot, Rosie, doesn’t clean, but instead watches over the grounds and reports back to its security team.
Rosie is a five-foot-tall, 400-pound robot that patrols the 40-acre community all day, every day, ensuring that tenants are safe.
According to a LeFrak City representative, Rosie is always on the grounds, recording 360-degree video from four different cameras while relaying messages back to the security team and sending notifications about what she sees.
As she roams around the community, Rosie greets residents with “Good morning” and “Hello.” She will also tell them the time if called upon to do so.
The plan to bring Rosie to LeFrak City was hatched during the investment process for state-of-the-art renovations at the housing community.
The $70 million modernization and renovation of LeFrak City included improvements to building lobbies and corridors; green initiatives such as solar panels for energy conservation; brand-new parking decks and lighting; apartment upgrades; and infrastructure work to the building’s façades, roofs and boilers.
Extensive landscaping revitalized the community’s courtyards and grounds. A major revamp of the shared outdoor amenities and recreational facilities included a new residents-only swimming pool, soccer field, tennis court, basketball court, putting green, game tables including ping pong and foosball, picnic tables and playgrounds.
“Because we had elevated the living experience at LeFrak City so much, we wanted to find other ways to innovate, and so bringing Rosie onboard was a natural fit for us,” said LeFrak’s representative. “We are always looking to stay on the cutting edge at LeFrak City in terms of enhancing and elevating quality of life for our residents.”
The representative stated that Rosie is popular with the children of the community, who often approach her, wave to her, touch and interact with her when they spot her on her path or across the courtyard.
“Rosie is at the cutting edge of technology—but more than that, she has really become a guardian of LeFrak City, whose job is to protect all our residents,” the representative said. “In doing so, she has also become an integral part of the community, keeping everything safe and pristine.”
Although Rosie has been a hit, LeFrak City doesn’t have plans to add any additional robots to the community.
