Founded in 1972, the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) is a multidisciplinary arts center based in Southeast Queens. Its mission is to offer high-quality visual, performing and literary arts and provide accessible education programs to encourage participation in the arts.
JCAL’s multicultural series of music, theater and dance performances; film screenings and lectures; contemporary visual arts exhibitions; in-school artist residencies; series of arts workshops; and free or low-cost after-school and summer programs serve more than 35,000 people of all ages.
The arts center is also a showcase for local, regional and national artists and performers and a perfect setting for productions of all sizes and scopes.
The youth education programs at JCAL are implemented to provide young people with opportunities to explore and refine their artistic talents, increase their cultural understanding and build academic, critical thinking and interpersonal and cognitive skills.
JCAL’s programs celebrate Queens’ rich cultural diversity and attract audiences from all over the city and Long Island. Its ongoing programs include Thursday Night Jazz and the Friday First Series for emerging artists who are looking for a stage on which they can perform.
