Iavarone Bros. isn’t your average deli, ranging in different meats, cheese and seafood, this family owned deli brings Italian flavor down the block from your home.
Located in Maspeth, Iavarone Bros. prides themselves on their customer loyalty, people come in and are automatically greeted by the butchers by name. The shop gives you a feeling of welcoming friendships and great food.
From sandwiches to sausage and peppers to rice balls, the variety is endless in this decent-sized shop. The Arancini is one of their store favorites, it’s mini-arborio rice balls with small bits of prosciutto and melted Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese blended perfectly together to create a smooth taste, while the outside has a toasted coating and a slight crunch when first biting into it. These rice balls can be simple appetizers served with marinara sauce to dip in.
The main entrees include sandwiches and hot entrees that can be side dishes to compliment the sandwiches or any meal you may be making at home. “The Godfather” is exactly what it sounds like, loaded with meat including ham, genoa salami, pepperoni and mortadella and then topped with provolone, soft vinegar peppers, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and olives. It’s like an Italian hero on steroids, packed with flavors coming from the meats and vinegar peppers, all between quality toasted Italian bread. The pepperoni gives it a somewhat faux spicy taste and it comes with a side of oil and vinegar.
The next popular flavorful sandwich on the list is the “Nonno Pasquale,” named after the owner’s great grandfather, and it includes sautéed broccoli rabe spread evenly on top of parma prosciutto with fresh mozzarella and extra virgin olive oil, all stuffed between brick oven Italian bread. Sounds simple, but there are so many things to note, the broccoli rabe and parma prosciutto create their own kind of flavor when combined with the olive oil. The soft Italian oven baked bread is an added plus to making this sandwich complete.
“The Next Generation” is a newer sandwich that the Maspeth owner, Michele Iavarone, came up with. It includes sautéed broccoli rabe, a grilled breaded chicken cutlet, topped with fresh mozzarella and your option of roasted or hot peppers on a brick-oven ciabatta rustica hero. The chicken is cooked to perfection and the peppers give it a spicy touch that is somewhat cooled down by the sautéed broccoli rabe, it’s their number one pick and a popular sandwich made for customers, and it’s easy to see why.
The next item to give this deli variety is their Chicken Iavarone, which is sliced chicken cutlet sautéed with peppers, artichoke hearts, mushrooms and capers in wine sauce. If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, not to worry, the wine sauce and peppers mask majority of the mushroom taste, the mushrooms go best when eaten together with the sliced chicken cutlet and peppers to give a soft yet slight crunchy texture. The flavors are evenly combined, but the mushrooms are still masked by the well-cooked chicken and peppers.
Similar in texture is the Risotto with sausage, broccoli rabe and fontina cheese. This rice dish is definitely a favorite. The rice, cheese and broccoli rabe create a smooth, soft texture that melts in your mouth to give you a promising flavor of evenly spread broccoli rabe and fontina cheese. This can easily be a side dish to go with “The Next Generation.”
Iavarone Bros. also has a variety of wines to go with their entrees to give you the full Italian feel. They’ve begun serving antibiotic-free meat to accommodate everyone and they’re constantly revamping their catering menu and coming up with new ideas with some of their head chefs. This family-owned business has four other locations aside from the Maspeth location, including a restaurant located in New Hyde Park.
