What
Defines Us
Throughout
these pages you have seen how the immigrant cultures
of Queens have helped shape this borough’s
history. From the Dutch settlers of the 17th Century
to the South Asian influx of the 21st, people
from almost every culture in the world have called
Queens home.
Their
influence can be found on every building, in every
park, in our theaters and in our schools. Entire
neighborhoods have been defined by the people
who founded, settled, moved in or took them over.
The
faces of every part of Queens have changed, and
will continue to do so. Where the Irish and Jews
held firm to Jackson Heights, they gave given
way to the Indians and Colombians. In Flushing
and Auburndale many of the Italians and Germans
have been replaced by the Chinese and Koreans.
In
every corner of Queens the story is the same,
and that story is still being told today.
As
one immigrant group gives way to another the lines
are redrawn, the history is written and the patches
of our quilt shift. New patches are added, the
quilt grows and we continue to wrap ourselves
in the richness and comfort of our diverse borough.
