To The Editor:
Here are some facts Republicans can’t ignore—although they’ll try. Republicans have always pushed for more tax cuts when they’re in power because they know that Democrats will be blamed when they’re in charge. Republicans don’t care because, once enacted, they will bind the hands of Democrats for years to come. Forcing them to once again be the parents paying off the GOP’s “Visa bill,” President Donald Trump’s corporate tax cuts will generate enormous deficits, setting up the GOP to claim—as House Speaker Paul Ryan has stated—that the time has come to cut Social Security, Medicare and welfare to reduce the expected $1 trillion deficit they just created by enacting those very tax cuts. It’s insanity!
Even Ryan, who is leaving the sinking ship, knows the truth. He just announced that the GOP plans to cut federal healthcare and anti-poverty programs because his party is about to explode the deficit. He admitted it. Deficits only matter to Republicans when Democrats are in power.
The Republican tax cuts leave Washington with less money and raise the specter of deficits’ damaging the economy as a rationale to take away the benefits that millions of Americans depend on.
Then, Democrats are forced to raise taxes to restore the benefits that millions of poor and middle-class Americans need to survive. But I guess Republicans will claim it’s all Barack Obama’s fault. Or, perhaps, Hillary Clinton’s emails are to blame. Monica Lewinsky? The late Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick? Maybe some will say these tax cuts were necessary to allow the nation’s six biggest Wall Street banks to post record profits in the first quarter. After all, during his campaign, Trump did say he was fighting for the “forgotten man.” Billionaires? What a disgrace. These are tax cuts for people who don’t need them, while our country’s homeless population explodes.
And Trump’s solution? Cut welfare, Medicaid and food stamps. Absolutely disgusting. Republicans also claim Obama accomplished nothing in eight years. They even claim the recession caused by George W. Bush’s policies prior to Obama becoming president was ended in 2009 by the Bush policies. Huh? One year into the Obama presidency, Bush stopped the recession he caused?
Now for some reality. Obama’s economy showed 75 consecutive months of job growth with no help from Republicans. In fact, everything Obama accomplished was in spite of GOP obstruction at every turn. That’s the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans back up their opinions with more opinions from people who share their opinions. Democrats base their statements using some things that affect Republicans the way kryptonite affects Superman—facts and science. Speaking of science, the amazing life of the late Stephen Hawking proved that a powerful brain doesn’t really need a functioning body to survive. At the other end of the spectrum, Trump continues to prove that a functioning body doesn’t need a brain at all. Just imagine if Trump were president on Sept. 11, 2001. Who knows what he would’ve done. He might have just complained that the Twin Towers should’ve been built from “Trump Steel” or launched a nuclear attack on Cleveland.
