Maritza Munoz, Woodside on the Move’s director of housing services, has been selected by state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) for his 2018 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction award, which honors a women who has made a significant impact on her community.
For a decade, Munoz has worked to ensure that western Queens tenants are informed of their housing rights. She launched the Housing Legal Clinic, a walk-in legal counseling program and Queens Legal Services.
Prior to working for Woodside on the Move, Munoz taught elementary, middle and high school students in her native Ecuador.
“I have spent my career working to make the lives of my neighbors better, from the students I taught to my neighbors in Woodside,” said Munoz. “Our community has so much potential and when good people work together, we can unleash the power of our neighborhoods. I am honored to join the 2018 Women of Distinction.”
The women being honored with the award will gather in Albany on May 1 for a celebratory reception. Their photos and bios will be part of an exhibit in the state capital.
