A funeral service was held on Monday in Glendale for an 11-year-old Woodhaven boy who died trying to save his friend who had fallen into an icy pond.
Anthony Perez had gone onto the ice at Strack Pond in Forest Park on Feb.
6 to rescue a 12-year-old friend, but then became stuck beneath the ice. Perez’s friend went to get help and FDNY responders removed Perez—who had been under water for nearly 30 minutes—from the pond. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
Family and friends helped to lead Perez’s distraught mother out of St. Pancras Church following a service on Monday morning.
The cause of death has yet to be determined by the city’s medical examiner.
