Boston University awarded academic degrees to 1,637 students in September 2015. Receiving degrees were Forest Hills residents Peter A. Spanos, Master of Science in International Marketing Management and Kimberly M. De Vine, Master of Criminal Justice in Criminal Justice and Matthew Zin of Rego Park, who received a Bachelor of Arts in History.
The National Law Enforcement & Firefighters Children’s Foundation (NLEAFCF) today announced Taylor Moss, of Howard Beach, as a recipient of the NLEAFCF Scholarship. Taylor received the scholarship in recognition of her exceptional leadership, community service and scholastic achievement.
Taylor was one of 25 students from across the country to receive the award, which is based on academic merit and financial need. The recipients are all children of a law enforcement officer or firefighter who was killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.
Taylor is a sophomore at the College of the Holy Cross. She is majoring in History, but is on the Pre-Medical track. Taylor aspires to go to medical school after graduating from under-graduate school. Seeing dedicated doctors help family members inspired Taylor to become a doctor herself. Taylor wants to give the same relief, hope and aid to others as her family has received.
The SUNY Canton College Foundation recently announced its student scholarship recipients for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Glenn Gonzalez of South Richmond Hill received the W. H. Swart `51 – Veteran Recognition Endowed Scholarship. Gonzalez is a SUNY Canton Law Enforcement Leadership major.
In total, the foundation distributed more than $302,000 in the form of 265 scholarships granted to approximately 195 students. More than 60 percent of those scholarships were given to students from St. Lawrence County.
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Nirala M. Bissram graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Bissram is the daughter of Ramashwar and Gina Bissram of Staten Island. She is also the sister of Arun Bissram.
The airman graduated in 2006 from Tottenville High School, Staten Island, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Saint John’s University, Jamaica.

Kaila DeSilva of Sunnyside, is studying at Istituto Europeo di Design in Italy. DeSilva is a junior majoring in Fashion and Textiles.
Angie Mendez of Jackson Heights, is studying at Mahidol University in Thailand. Mendez is a junior majoring in Criminal Justice.
Chelsea Zic of Astoria, is studying at University of Barcelona in Spain. Zic is a senior majoring in Mass Communication.
Daniel Corridan of Woodside is a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s soccer team that participated in the NCAA Tournament. RPI, one of 61 schools selected, earned one of the 19 at-large bids.
