The Church in the Gardens Nursery School may soon be closing its doors, according to a petition that has popped up on Change.org.
The petition, which was started on April 30, stated that the school could be closed as early as May 1 since it has failed to fill the school’s director position. The school’s previous director resigned on March 19.
Cynthia Stubbs, a parent who started the petition, said that the failure to fill the position in the more than 40 days since the previous director’s resignation led to a violation on April 20 and an administrative hearing with the city’s Departments of Health and Education. She added that the school’s board of trustees will again be in violation if it does not prove that it is looking for a new director.
Stubbs noted that the school is a staple of the community, has excellent teachers and programs, and provides much-needed revenue for the church.
She said that parents have received limited communication from the school’s board, although parents have tried to contact its members and advise them of qualified candidates for the position.
Stubbs noted that a current parent who is qualified to take on the director’s position offered to take the job pro bono until a new director is found.
“We are aware that the board has received résumés from several job postings—and yet, to our knowledge, no candidates have been contacted or interviewed,” Stubbs said. “We should not be looking at a voluntary closure by the board. We will not sit back while they disrupt our children’s education before the end of the school year or create chaos for parents who were committed to attending in the fall and are now desperately seeking alternative options.”
An employee at the school noted that there will be a meeting regarding the issue at 7 p.m. on May 3 at the school.
Both Stubbs and representatives for the school could not be reached by press time.
