Several Queens students recently completed their undergraduate studies and received their diplomas from SUNY Oswego, including Bayside’s Kevin Williams (who earned a bachelor of arts in broadcasting and mass communication), Astoria’s Liam McAleer (bachelor of science degree in business administration), Far Rockaway’s Marquis Wright (bachelor of arts in information science), Springfield Gardens’ Ebony Staley (bachelor of arts in public relations) and St. Albans’ Amani Beauzile (bachelor of arts in psychology) and Dion Matthews (bachelor of arts in graphic design).
Whitestone’s Spc. Stephen Hershenfeld, who is serving with the 88th Area Command, has received the New York Guard’s six-month service ribbon.
The New York Army National Guard has announced that a number of Queens soldiers have been inducted into their various units—including Fresh Meadows’ Pfc. Noel Acosta (Company D, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry), Flushing’s Pfc. Qiang Chen (Company C, 642nd Support Battalion) and Spc. Yoojin Park (37th Finance Detachment), Astoria’s Pvt. Henry Reyes (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry), Elmhurst’s Pvt. Zulaga Garcia (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry), Jamaica’s Spc. Mohammed Huda (Company B, 101st Signal Battalion), St. Albans’ Pvt. Loquinta Humphrey (Company F, 427th Brigade Support Battalion), Queens Village’s Pvt. Robert Joseph (133rd Quartermaster Company), Hollis’ Pvt. Lloyd Mumby (Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery) and Rockaway Park’s Pvt. Ivan Nyiiro (Company F, 427th Brigade Support Battalion).
SUNY Oswego has given dean’s awards scholarships to several Queens students. The scholarships are $6,000 over four years. Recipients include, Flushing biology major Gengle Niu, Woodhaven English major Juliette Schmidt, Corona biology major Christhian Diaz and Jamaica’s Fabiana Netus.
Bayside’s Sacred Heart Catholic Academy will hold a 2017 holiday supermarket sweeps fundraiser on Nov. 3. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 and include coffee, cake, Bingo cards and a chance at winning a door prize, such as an auction table and baskets. For tickets, call Kerri at (917) 502-3424.
