Several northeast Queens pharmacy students at the University of the Sciences at Philadelphia College received their white coats during a ceremony on Sept. 23. The white coat ceremony is an annual rite of passage for students in their first professional year of UScience’s six-year pharmacy program. Students who received their white coats included Whitestone’s Nardin Farid, Flushing’s Elizabeth Ha and Fresh Meadows’ Raymond Li.
A number of Queens members of the National Guard have completed basic training and welcomed to their units—including Flushing’s Pfc. Hideyuki Baba (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry) and Kenneth McCarthy (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 101st Signal Battalion); Forest Hills’ Pfc. Stephen Jenkins (Headquarters and Support Company, 42nd Infantry Division); Elmhurst’s Pfc. Diego Cajamarcatenecela (who was welcomed into the 1,156th Engineer Company); Hollis’ Pvt. Lloyd Mumby (Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery); Jamaica’s Pvt. Gregory Jacobs (145th Maintenance Company), Spc. Shadenie Bolton (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation) and Pvt. Jesmond Patterson (Company B, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry); and Cambria Heights’ Pvt. Gabriel McFadden (145th Maintenance Company).
Assemblyman Edward Braunstein is sponsoring a Halloween essay and drawing contest for students in grades two through five. The essay or drawing should have a Halloween theme, such as an account of a favorite trick-or-treat experience or how an applicant picked a Halloween costume this year.
Those interested in participating should print their name, grade and school on their entry. Essays should be submitted to Assemblyman Braunstein’s office by mail at 213-33 39th Ave., Suite 238, Bayside, NY, 11361, via email at Braunstein@nyassembly.gov or by fax to (718) 357-5947.
Drawings should be mailed or dropped off. Entries may be of any size or format. District-wide prizes will be awarded to the winner in each grade and New York State Certificates of Merit will be awarded to all students who participate. The deadline for the contest is Oct. 31.
Flushing’s Holy Family Church, located at 175-20 74th Ave., will host a defensive driving course sponsored by the National Safety Council on Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $45. For more information and registration, call (631) 360-9720.
