Samuel Martinez has been appointed to serve on the Bob Jones University delegation to the South Carolina Student Legislature for the 2015-16 academic year.
Martinez, a resident of College Point, is a junior majoring in History at BJU.
Lavina Lu of Oakland Gardens, a doctor of pharmacy student in Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at University of the Sciences, received a white coat at a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015.
The white coat ceremony is an annual rite of passage for students in their first professional year (third year) of USciences’ six-year pharmacy program, and symbolizes their dedication to the profession of pharmacy and to the care of others.
Clarkson University sophomore biomolecular science student Xulan Deng of Flushing, won first place in the biomedical sciences oral session. Deng’s research examines Yersinia pestis, a highly virulent bacterium, and how it suppresses dendritic cell maturation in vitro.
Spc. Sheon Bacchus, from Glen Oaks, completed initial entry training in the New York Guard, the state’s uniformed volunteer emergency response force, held at Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill, NY. He is assigned to the HQ, New York Guard of the New York Guard graduated from the Initial Entry training course.

Bucknell University student Alexa Calcagnini of Flushing was honored with the President’s Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. Calcagnini is in Bucknell’s Class of 2017. The President’s Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement is awarded annually to Bucknell students who demonstrate the highest level of academic achievement by attaining a cumulative GPA of 4.00 on a scale of 4.00.
