Crossing Guard Bill Passes

Last month, the Legislature passed a bill making any assault on School Crossing Guards a “D” felony. On July 7, standing outside IS 145, a group of Queens School Crossing Guards were joined by Local 372 President Santos Crespo, Jr., to express their thanks to State Sen. Jose Peralta and Assemblyman Michael DenDekker who co-sponsored and pushed for passage of the legislation.

“Our School Crossing Guards are outside our schools day-in and day-out throughout the year to protect and ensure the safety of our children as they arrive at school and return home,” said Local 372 President Santos Crespo, Jr. “Today we are here to thank Senator Jose Peralta and Assemblyman Michael DenDekker who have provided some protection for our School Crossing Guards.”

Located at the corner of Northern Blvd and 80th Street, it was at this intersection where 11-year-old IS 145 student Miguel Torres was hit and killed by a construction truck in December 2012.

“The most effective way to ensure the safety of our children and fulfill the ambitious goals of Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero program is to provide a crossing guard on every corner of all of our schools,” said Crespo.
