A true son of Queens, Kelvin Rodriguez, was appointed recently as Community Board 5’s sole new board member.
Rodrigeuz, a Rego Park resident and lifetime resident of Queens, is a 2007 graduate of Christ the King High School and later of St. John’s University, where he got his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
When asked what his interest was in community advocacy, Rodriguez said, “I’ve been interested for a while, I’ve lived in the community all my life.”
He said, WR Management, the developer he works for started purchasing land in the area and it furthered his interest in the community, and how it could improve.
Currently, Rodriguez is managing a project at 870 Cyrpress Ave. in Ridgewood. WR Management purchased the building that once housed a catering company and is turning it into a supermarket called Billy’s Market Place which will open this fall.
Once it opens, he will be managing the store’s day to day operations and feels that will involve him in the community even more than before. His company has managed supermarkets before and knows how attached a manager becomes to the patrons who come in on a daily basis and talk about the neighborhood.
He noted that one of the main issues in Ridgewood is housing market. Rodriguez said when he is with his family who also lives in Rego Park they talk about how, “Everything is going up.”
He’s interested in learning more about “trying to keep affordable housing in a market this is changing greatly.”
Rodriguez, who is getting married next year and plans to make a life in this community, is also concerned about school zoning. “People want their kids to go to the schools nearby,” he said.
He also concerned about the plethora of transportation issues facing the western Queens area and hopes the work being done at the Kew Gardens exchange will also alleviate the backups on the Jackie Robinson Parkway.
“Living and working here, I want the community to succeed, if they don’t succeed neither will I,” said Rodriguez.
