To The Editor:
Community Board 7 feels aggrieved over the city’s and Economic Development Corporation’s lack of transparency with reference to Willets Point, and justifiably so. More egregious, however, is the misrepresentations and blatant lies from the developers without any city interference about their Willets Point intentions. All they care about is a preposterous 1.4 million-square-foot megamall at the Citi Field parking lot and the 2008 Willets Point plan buried into the distant future and in all likelihood remain buried.
CB 7 should be aware even if the city and EDC state their intentions with regard to Willets Point, their credibility is not worth a bucket of warm spit. They joined with the developers in an unsuccessful attempt to have the New York State Court of Appeals reverse the Appellate Division’s decision holding the attempt at a megamall on Flushing Meadows Corona Park land violated the law. The current administration never at any time criticized the outrageous raid on the city treasury by the developers, the postponement of Willets Point until 2025 if indeed it will ever come to pass, and sublimation of affordable housing, if any. In short, like the developers, all the city and ECD care about is the mall and professional soccer and hockey stadiums at Willets Point.
CB 7 has ULURP jurisdiction over Willets Point. The time has come for that board to wake up to reality.
