After three years of service as chairman of Community Board 9, Raj Rampershad has stepped down from his position as term limits restricted him from a fourth year in the position.
Rampershad said he recalled that just after being elected chairman three years ago, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz called him into her office and asked him, “What is your vision for this board?” He said that he replied, “Forward.”
“It’s been an honor serving these past few years,” Rampershad said.
He remembered the night that he was elected.
“I didn’t sleep,” he said. “I had anxiety because I was wondering what I got myself into.”
He said that three years ago, CB 9 was in transition, in the process of trying to find a new district manager and “in the papers for all the wrong reasons.”
Rampershad said that he aimed to change the atmosphere of the board and praised the elected officers with whom he served.
“Let’s face it: It takes everyone to get these things done,” he said.
At the meeting, J. Richard Smith was voted in as the new chairman, Rampershad as first vice chairman, Kenichi Wilson as second vice chairman and John Carter as treasurer.
