An application for additional outdoor dining sparked a dispute between the proprietors of the Dog and the Duck gastropub at 45-20 Skillman Ave. in Sunnyside, and local neighbors, during last week’s Community Board 2 meeting.
The application, which seeks the addition of 10 tables and 28 seats outside, became the focus of contention when three women, who live across from the establishment, came before the board members for a decision. According to the residents, the Dog and the Duck have not been “good neighbors” and have continued to ignore requests to taper the volume.
At the meeting, Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) spoke out in support of the unenclosed sidewalk café application.
“The Dog and the Duck, like so many other restaurants and small businesses, is really critical to the success of our neighborhood,” Van Bramer said. “I support [the Dog and the Duck] making their business one that works for them, works for our community.”
Following the discussion, members voted to approve the application with the caveat that the owners be more receptive of resident’s concerns with noise.
