A 1-year-old girl was found dead on Friday after police responded to a 911 call at a Woodside Quality Inn, which had been using rooms to provide shelter for homeless families.
At approximately 11:55 p.m., a man called 911 demanding help for his daughter, Kimio Williams, who was unconscious at the Quality Inn, located at 53-05 Queens Blvd. The child was found to be unresponsive after emergency services arrived at the hotel.
Williams was transported to Elmhurst Hospital by EMS, where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
Isaac McGinn, a spokesman for the city Department of Homeless Services, said that he couldn’t provide specific information on the infant due to confidentiality rules.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” McGinn said. “We offer our condolences to the family and will provide the family with any and all support that we can during this difficult time.”
McGinn also said this Quality Inn uses some rooms to shelter homeless families with children who would otherwise be turned out onto the street. However, as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to address homelessness, the city will soon no longer use hotels to house the homeless.
