This
deli and restaurant has been serving its many patrons for 35 years and
with good reasons: its popularity, its fresh tasty food, reasonable
prices, large portions and the friendly owners Marty and Sandy
Silverman and their staff.
Passing
the interesting deli items displayed in the front display cases, we
took a table in the rear and began dinner with an inviting platter of
half-sour pickles, green tomatoes, pickled cabbage, cherry (hot)
peppers and slivers of green pepper. A separate dish of cole slaw and
some fresh rye bread were added while we perused the lengthy menu.
Sandy offered us some potato knishes which were the lightest we’ve
ever enjoyed. Oops, almost forgot to mention our appetizer of Gefilte
Fish which was finely made, light and flavorful.
We
checked out the menu designed for “Fressers” (big eaters).
Although all the deli offerings were tempting, we decided on the
Dinner Special listing which includes soup or appetizer, an
entrée, potato and a choice of Derma, Egg Barley, Kasha Varneskes,
noodle pudding, potato pancakes or potato kugel plus dessert and
coffee or tea - all for the price of the main dish and served from
6p.m. to 8p.m. daily.
I
had the Stuffed Sweet Cabbages (two) “just the way it’s suppose to
be” according to the menu ($14.95). It was a hearty portion of
ground meat and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves. My partner had Broiled
Liver Steak topped with lots of fried onions. The accompanying
vegetable was garlic-enhanced fresh spinach and great Steak Fries
($13.45).
Sandy
is very proud (and with good reason) of the cured-on-the-premises
Pastrami. It is excellent and on our next trip back I’m going to
have one of their great big Hot Pastrami sandwiches ($7.50).
Other
mouth-watering dinner offerings include Chicken in the Pot “just
like Grandma used to make it” ($12.75) and a Braised Fresh Brisket
of Prime Beef ($13.75). Another bright idea on the menu is “a little
this, a little that” order of three (3) appetizers as a main dish.
But, no matter what you choose at Surrey’s, you are sure to
“enjoy.”
