The new Gebhardt’s (the original opened in 1988 at 65-06 Myrtle Ave., Glendale) adds the flavor of nouvelle cuisine to the latest menu. But the classic German dishes from the original restaurant are still offered on a separate menu. We chose to veer back and forth between the two menus.

We enjoyed the elegant setting in the peaceful rear dining area (note the table appointments from the heavy candlesticks to the silver tableware). Crabcakes Napoleon are a fine start – two well-made patties of fresh crab meat with Goffrett chips, tomato couli and olive oil ($8.95). Another favorite choice is a Wild Mushroom Strudel — delicate pastry filled with assorted mushrooms and caramelized onions on a bed of sautéed Swiss chard dressed with a roasted peppers vinaigrette ($7.95).

Other choices offered include Mussels in white wine with garlic broth and Asian BBQ Ribs or a choice from the German listing of Herring Salat, Chopped Chicken Livers etc.

For the main entrée from the Continental menu, try the popular Grilled Ahi Tuna- an elegant presentation of grilled fish with jasmine rice cakes, Asian veggies (snow peas etc.) with Hoi sin sauce and a tomato/ginger coulis. Another outstanding taste combination is Spiced Asian Duck with sweet and sour oriental noodles, sesame cabbage with port wine sauce ($17.95). Other selections include Grilled Cornish Hen, Braised Lamb Shank, Grilled Salmon etc.

From the German Menu, we enjoyed the Tiroler Schnitzel – an enormous, breaded veal cutlet in a white wine and mushroom sauce topped with Jarlsberg cheese ($15.95). Other Deutsch favorites include Sauerbraten, Jaeger Schnitzel and the all-time favorite, Schlachtplatte with an assortment of grilled wursts ($15.95).

Desserts ranged from German Pound Cake to the yummy Chocolate Soufflé Fantasy which is made to order and worth the 10 minute wait.

Our thanks to hostess Elaine, our professional server, Dean, and Chef Martin for a delightful dining experience.
