Donovan’s is great place to stop in for a few drinks, but it’s also a treat for dinner. The Irish institution seats over 200 people in wood-paneled rooms complete with stained-glass windows. Its large tables and extensive menu make it the perfect place to bring any group or enjoy dinner for two.

The Shepherd’s Pie is arguably the best in the borough. But beyond the traditional Irish fare, there is something for everyone — from broiled scallops to zucchini sticks (as an appetizer).

The filet of sole I had was very good; the white fish was beautifully prepared. It came with large sides of mashed potatoes and broccoli . . . a great dinner for a hot summer day.

My colleague had the salmon steak — which was basic and tasty.

And on a hearty note, their burgers are not to be missed. Thick and juicy, their reputation proceeds them and is well deserved. They are delectable and the French fries are excellent.

And just because Donovan’s is Irish, don’t think they can’t do Italian. The lasagna is delicious — piping hot with just the right amount of cheese.

Still, the truly special thing about this pub is its atmosphere and the people who work there. Jack Donovan, a former detective, manages the place with flair and style. He greets everyone as they walk in — and knows almost everyone’s name.

The serving staff is second to none. Our server was from Ireland and had all the charm of the old country.

So if you’re in the mood for a few drinks (they have a wonderful whiskey selection), a great atmosphere, and an excellent selection of food — this is the place.

And if Woodside isn’t your regular evening haunt, there is always the Donovan’s in Bayside. Although the Woodside location is the original, the Bayside location has masterfully replicated the Irish pub style and friendly grace that makes the Woodside location so memorable . . . and the food is just as hearty and good.
