Archer Green Apartments, the mixed-use development that will replace a former NYPD parking garage, broke ground in downtown Jamaica on Friday.
Part of the city’s Jamaica Now Action Plan, the project, located at 92–23 168th St., is expected to provide 380 units of 100 percent affordable housing, approximately 15,000 square feet of community facility space, and 68,800 square feet of retail and commercial space.
“Archer Green will bring a vibrant mix of affordable housing, parking, community and retail space, while also generating new opportunities for M/WBE [Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise] businesses and creating jobs for New Yorkers, demonstrating our comprehensive approach to transforming communities and bolstering economic opportunity for our city under Housing New York,” said Eric Enderlin, president of the city’s Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The $153 million Jamaica Now Action Plan was created to enhance the downtown Jamaica community by addressing the challenges that the neighborhood has faced in recent years, such as providing workforce training, small-business support, affordable housing, neighborhood safety measures, green space and more.
“Jamaica’s transformation continues as we break ground on a long-awaited development that delivers on our promise to expand opportunities in Jamaica including affordable housing,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.
“A hallmark of the Jamaica Now Action Plan is to revitalize one of Queens’ most critical commercial and cultural hubs. This mixed-use complex will provide the community with the affordable housing, community facility space, retail and employment opportunities it needs — and deserves — going forward,” Katz added.
The Archer Green Apartments project is expected to create approximately 350 construction jobs and more than 300 permanent jobs. The project’s construction management team Omni New York LLC and Lettire Construction Corporation will participate in HireNYC, a free city program that connects New Yorkers with workforce-development services and job opportunities for various investment projects.
This project itself has a goal of 25 percent M/WBE participation and 35 percent minority and female workforce participation in construction jobs, in addition to creating new staff positions.
“Housing is a major component to the economic revitalization of Jamaica, Queens,” said Ian Harris, chair of the Jamaica Now Leadership Council. “The Jamaica Now Leadership Council is proud to see one of its action items come to fruition with the redevelopment of the NYPD garage. This project brings jobs, affordable housing and community space, making it a win for the whole community.”
In a statement, Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman (D-Springfield Gardens) said she hopes that the Archer Green Apartments project will help combat the neighborhood’s current homelessness and unemployment crises.
