A new comedy venue has taken residence on Vernon Boulevard at Hunter’s Point where the former Laughing Devil Comedy Club once stood. The Standing Room, located at 47-38 Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City, is now up and running and offering a variety of specialty cocktails, local and microbrewed beer, music, comedy and more to the locals in the area.
The Standing Room comes from the same team that created The Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club in Manhattan— Patrick Milligan, Cris Italia, Paul Italia and David Kimowitz,
The team hopes to lure bigger name comedians that often perform at clubs in Manhattan, but they will also allow the new club to evolve at its own pace and develop its own vibe.
“It’s a smaller, more intimate room than the club in Gramercy,” explained Milligan. “This gives us a chance to try things that are different, even experimental, while also tapping into the incredible talent pool we already work with.”
Comedy programming on weekends and select weeknights previously offered by The Laughing Devil will continue to be offered by the location’s new occupant. “But we’re going to be more than that,” says co-owner Paul Italia, “I used to live here and I’ve watched the neighborhood grow and evolve over the last decade. This is a terrific community and we want to provide people here with a great night out, whether that’s enjoying a comedy show or just relaxing with a good drink. We have a menu of unique cocktails and local beers, we’re partnering with local restaurants to offer special desserts and small bites, and we have projectors to broadcast the game or present screenings. And, of course, great comedy.”
As it is entering its soft launch phase, The Standing Room is offering plenty of great night-life enticements for the Western Queens community to stop by their newly renovated lounge and comedy venue.
To celebrate the late June opening, the club is offering local residents opportunities to experience every aspect of the club for free. Special offers include: Complementary first round of drinks on July 23 and 30 and free tickets to upcoming comedy shows at the concert, using junk mail and other documents to prove you are a resident of LIC – or the surrounding neighborhoods of Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside and Greenpoint – to receive two free tickets to any show through August 31, and hosting a “Happy Hour On Us” including a one hour hosted bar, drink specials and free admission to the comedy show.
