114th Pct.: Shooting & Burglary

POLICE-INVOLVED SHOOTING – At 11:16 a.m. on April 12, officers from the 114th Precinct responded to a family dispute involving a firearm at 31-28 38th St.

Upon arrival, a uniformed sergeant and a police officer observed a male in possession of a shotgun. Officers instructed the man to drop the weapon. The man then turned in the direction of the officers and the police officer discharged his weapon one time, striking the man in the torso.

Once inside the residence, officers found a female, identified as Carolann Matyka, 65, in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to the head.

The man shot by police, identified as Jack Calvello, 86, was transported to Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Matyka was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was also pronounced dead.

A loaded 12-gauge shotgun was recovered at the scene.

BURGLARY – The NYPD is asking the public’s assistance identifying and locating two suspects wanted in connection with a burglary within the confines of the 114th Precinct.

At approximately 2 a.m. on April 7, the two suspects entered a social club located at 37-09 31st Ave., removed $12,000 and fled the scene.
