FATAL ACCIDENT – On Saturday, June 27, at 12:26 a.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on Ditmars Boulevard at 19th Street in Astoria.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Betty Jean Diblasio, 21, lying on the roadway, unconscious and unresponsive, with severe head trauma. EMS responded to the location and transported Diblasio to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound on Ditmars Boulevard approaching 19th Street, when Diblasio was crossing Ditmars Boulevard from south to north. The vehicle struck her, knocking her to the pavement, causing her head injury. The vehicle operator then fled the scene.
On June 30, police arrested Nicholas Colleran, 24, of Astoria and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, filing a false report, violating of highway law, driving without a valid license, failure to exercise due care and failure to stop at a stop sign.
