FATAL COLLISION —
A 45-year-old man was killed after striking an opened car door and then being hit by a truck on May 29 in Long Island City, police said.
Around 2:54 p.m., police responded to a report of a collision at 21st Street and 46th Avenue. Officers discovered a man with severe trauma to his head and body. EMS transported the man to Booth Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation determined that the man was riding a bicycle heading northbound on 21st Street when a parked car opened its door towards the roadway and the bicyclist struck it, causing him to fall off the bicycle and into the roadway, where a white box truck struck him.
All of the vehicles’ operators remained on the scene, and the operator of the box truck was taken into custody for not having a valid driver’s license. The identity of the cyclist has not been released.
